Skyliner vs Narita Express: which airport train to take from Narita

2026 fares, journey times and the N’EX round-trip deal compared, with worked costs for Ueno, Tokyo Station and Shinjuku, plus the cheaper Keisei trains and when a bus wins.

Illustration for Skyliner vs N’EX

Narita is about 60 kilometres from central Tokyo, and two express trains do most of the work: Keisei’s Skyliner and JR East’s Narita Express (N’EX). Both are comfortable, both have luggage space and both take reserved seats. Which is better depends almost entirely on where your hotel is, and on whether you will fly home from Narita too.

Quick answer

Staying near Ueno, Asakusa or anywhere on the east side? Take the Skyliner. Staying at Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku or Yokohama? Take the Narita Express, ideally on the round-trip ticket.

  • Skyliner: Narita to Nippori from 36 minutes, Keisei-Ueno about 41 minutes. ¥2,580 one way, ¥2,310 online, ¥4,500 online round trip.
  • Narita Express (N’EX): to Tokyo Station from 53 minutes with no change. ¥3,140 one way to Tokyo, ¥3,330 to Shinagawa, Shibuya or Shinjuku.
  • N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket: ¥5,200 for adults, ¥2,600 for children, valid 14 days, for holders of a non-Japanese passport.
  • On a budget: Keisei’s ordinary trains cost about half and take longer.

The Skyliner’s one-way fare is two parts: a ¥1,280 base fare plus a ¥1,300 Skyliner seat ticket. Tap an IC card such as Suica at the gate and the base fare drops slightly, to ¥1,267, so the total is ¥2,567. Ride without a Skyliner seat ticket and Keisei adds ¥300 to the seat charge, so buy it before you board.

The N’EX fare also has two parts, the base fare and the limited express charge, but you buy them together as one ticket. The Narita Express runs on JR East’s timetable: as an example, one morning train leaves Narita Airport Terminal 1 at 09:16, reaches Tokyo Station at 10:17 and Shinjuku at 10:41.

Which one for your hotel

Your hotel is nearBetter choiceWhy
Ueno, Asakusa, Yanaka, NipporiSkylinerFastest and cheapest; you arrive right in the area
Akihabara, KandaSkyliner, then JR from Nippori or UenoShort JR hop after the fastest airport train
Tokyo Station, Ginza, NihonbashiN’EXDirect to Tokyo Station, no change with bags
Shinagawa, Shibuya, ShinjukuN’EX (round-trip ticket if eligible)Direct; the round-trip ticket makes it the cheapest comfortable option
YokohamaN’EXDirect trains; the round-trip ticket saves the most here
Oshiage (Skytree), Asakusa on a budgetKeisei Access ExpressDirect and much cheaper, but slower and no reserved seats

The one thing that tips the balance is the change at Nippori. It is a well-signed transfer between the Keisei and JR gates, but with two large suitcases at rush hour, a direct N’EX is the calmer choice for the west side of the city. If you are travelling light, the Skyliner plus a short JR ride is often just as quick door to door.

The N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket

This is the deal that makes the Narita Express competitive. It covers one ride from Narita Airport into the Tokyo area and one ride back to the airport within 14 days, in that order. You can arrive at one station and leave from another, for example arriving at Shinjuku and departing from Tokyo Station.

  • Price: ¥5,200 for adults (12 and over) and ¥2,600 for children aged 6 to 11.
  • Who can buy it: anyone holding a passport issued by a country other than Japan, including foreign residents. You show the passport when you collect it.
  • Where to collect: only at the JR stations at Narita Airport (Terminal 1 and Terminal 2·3), where ticket counters open from 6:30 to 21:45. So you cannot start the round trip in Tokyo.
  • Seats: ordinary-car reserved seats are included at no extra charge. A Green Car seat costs the full Green Car charge on top.
  • Transfers: after the N’EX you can change to other JR East trains within the covered area at no extra cost, as long as you do not leave the ticket gates. Once you exit, that ride is used.

Against two single tickets, JR East’s own comparison shows the round trip saving ¥1,080 for Tokyo Station (¥6,280 for two singles), ¥1,460 for Shinagawa, Shibuya or Shinjuku (¥6,660), and ¥3,760 for Yokohama (¥8,960).

Skyliner tickets: how to save

  • Buy online. Keisei discounts Skyliner tickets bought online or through designated travel agencies: ¥2,310 one way for adults, against ¥2,580 at the counter. Children aged 6 to 11 pay ¥1,290 at the counter.
  • Online round trip: ¥4,500 for adults. The round-trip ticket can be exchanged only at the Narita Airport stations, not at Ueno or Nippori, so it suits people who land at Narita.
  • Booking window: seat tickets go on sale one month before travel.

Worked example: one adult, round trip

Estimate Official fares for late 2026. The JR Yamanote fare from Nippori to Shinjuku is our estimate of about ¥260 each way, based on JR’s current fares for similar distances; check it in a route planner.

Hotel areaSkyliner (online round trip)N’EXCheaper
Ueno¥4,500¥5,200 round trip, plus a change at TokyoSkyliner by ¥700
Shinjuku¥4,500 + about ¥520 JR = about ¥5,020¥5,200 round tripAlmost the same; N’EX has no change
Shinjuku, without the round-trip ticketabout ¥5,140 (two online singles + JR)¥6,660 (two singles)Skyliner by about ¥1,500
YokohamaSkyliner + a long JR ride¥5,200 round tripN’EX, clearly

For a family of three adults heading to Shinjuku, the gap between the two routes is under ¥600 in total, so choose on comfort. For the same family staying in Ueno, the Skyliner saves about ¥2,100.

Cheaper and slower: Keisei’s other trains

Not every Keisei train is the Skyliner. The Access Express uses the same fast Narita Sky Access line and runs through to Oshiage, Asakusa and beyond on the Toei Asakusa line. Keisei’s own example is ¥1,190 and about 46 minutes from Narita Airport to Oshiage. Slower Keisei Main Line trains are cheaper again. None of these has reserved seats or dedicated luggage racks, so they suit light packers outside rush hour.

Airport limousine buses also run from Narita to major hotels and stations. They are slower and can be delayed by traffic, but a bus that stops at your hotel door can beat any train with heavy bags or tired children. Check the operator’s timetable for your terminal.

On the day

  • Allow time. Immigration and baggage can take an hour or more when several long-haul flights land together. Book a train at least 90 minutes after your scheduled landing, or buy at the airport once you have your bags.
  • Engineering work in November 2026: JR East has announced that some Narita Express services will be suspended from 6 to 8 November 2026. Check JR East’s notice if you land that weekend.
  • Get an IC card for the rest of your trip. See Suica, PASMO and ICOCA and your first three hours in Japan.

Common mistakes

  • Boarding the Skyliner without a seat ticket. It costs an extra ¥300.
  • Buying the N’EX round trip when flying home from Haneda. The return ride is only valid to Narita Airport.
  • Exiting the gates at Tokyo Station when you meant to change. On the round-trip ticket, leaving the gates ends that ride.
  • Taking an ordinary Keisei train at rush hour with big suitcases. Commuter trains have no luggage space.
  • Assuming the Japan Rail Pass covers the Skyliner. It is a Keisei train; the JR Pass covers JR trains such as the N’EX. See is the JR Pass worth it.
