Graduated from the University of Tokyo, where he majored in law. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1976, now serving his tenth term. Has been minister of education, minister of international trade and industry, chairman of the Policy Research Council of the LDP, chief cabinet secretary, and minister of finance and minister of state for economic and fiscal policy and for financial services. Has been chairman of the Economic Policy Research Council of the LDP since October 2009.
